Transneft Druzhba Starts Trial Use of Unique Infrasonic Pipeline Monitoring System

Date of publication: 11 September 2020

Transneft Druzhba has started a trial use of an infrasonic pipeline monitoring system (IPMS) with a leak detection function.

The unique system of permanent remote monitoring of the technical condition of oil pipelines was developed by scientists from Novosibirsk and has no analogues. It differs from used leakage detection systems by its versatility, higher sensitivity and positioning accuracy.

Due to the peculiarities of infrasound propagation, the IPMS is capable of detecting mechanical effects on a pipe at long distances with an accuracy of 100 m and recording even small leaks.  Also, the new system carries out flaw detection of the inner surface of a pipeline, registers PIGs location, monitors stop valves and performs a number of other diagnostic functions.

The IPMS will operate as part of a pilot project. Based on the results of the infrasonic system operation, the potential of its further application at Transneft’s facilities will be studied.
